Doran Seff, Mfa.

Doran Seff is a Screenwriter/ Author/ Producer in Playa Del Rey, CA who specializes in the craft fundamentals of the storytelling process. He received an MFA in Writing for Film & Television from the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts, and has a BFA in Creative Writing from the University of Colorado Denver. An award-winning screenwriter and published author, he developed storytelling techniques that transcend medium and get to the core of the writer’s perspective. He’s consulted on projects of all kinds: films shown at Cannes Film Festival, Feature Films, Masters Theses, Book-to-Film Adaptations, Memoirs, and College Applications.

Although the goal changes from client to client, his fundamental approach is the same; Identify the story you’re trying to tell, and help you actualize the best way to tell it. His approach has been molded by the eclectic mentors he’s studied under, the writers of Batman Movies, Emmy-Winning Sitcom jokesters, and Lead Writers of hard-hitting Netflix crime dramas. He also uses terminologies and frameworks from pedagogic influences such as Robert Mckee, William Goldman, David Howard, Frank Daniel, and more. But beyond leaning on the giants, Doran’s method for finding and excavating the story inside his clients is more personal than that. He’s built a process that breaks down the truth of a story to its smallest, most indivisible core, and helps you build around it.

In his personal life, he lives with his partner, Hannah, and their Border Collie, Bean. He lives near the beach and loves to play volleyball and ride his superscooter along the SoCal coast. He takes Jeopardy too seriously, loves history and true crime podcasts, and can solve a Rubik’s Cube in under a minute. While freestyle rapping. But please, don’t time him. It makes him nervous.

Pillars of Pedagogy

No Templates

Each story requires its own approach. We don’t use any 12 Step, Write a Screenplay In One Weekend!, cookie-cutter story format. If you have a method that’s important to your process, we’re happy to incorporate it into our work. Our approach is more holistic, designed to help you face the idea of a blank page, that hot deadline, or the story problem you just can't seem to crack.

Authenticity

The thing that separates competent stories from special stories is authenticity. You already have that. Our methods take the things you’ve learned about the world the hard way, your unique perspective, and apply it to your stories in ways that are totally authentic to you and your voice.

Characters come first

Until you have a character that wants something, you don’t have a story. What do they want? What do they fear? What do they have to overcome to get what they want? We help you dive into the psychology of your characters to find their truth, and build a story around their wants and needs.

Finding The Truth

Sometimes the hardest part of storytelling is finding what a story really wants to say.  A well-told story is almost always an extrapolation of one small, simple truth that resonates. We’ll help you find what your story has been dying to say, and bring that truth to the pages.
